Facebook Targeting Mobile For More Usage and Users

Facebook is a social media site with more than one billion active users worldwide. Now Facebook is targeting India to grow up its already dominant position. It plans to ramp up mobile access functionalities and partnerships with carriers.

In India, there are 71 million monthly active users as of December 31, 2012, an increase of 54% compared to the same period in 2011.When Facebook floated in February last year, the wildly popular social networking business warned in its prospectus that the rise of mobile was one of the firm's largest potential risks. The concern was that because Facebook had not yet developed a clear strategy for making money on phones and tablets, the company could simply become another social networking site loaded with millions of users but with little way of monetising their patronage.

After India Brazil is the other country that has shown a similar spike: 67 million monthly active users as of December 31, 2012, up 81%. As many as 82% of Facebook's monthly active users are outside the US and Canada.

Two out of three internet users in India accesses social media websites such as Facebook or Twitter every day. Social media audience has become a hot area for organizations, brands and recruiters to reach their niche audience, recruit people, even organise mass protests. According to a study by research firm IMRB International and Internet and Mobile Association of India, over 60% of Social media access happens from small towns.
